Sometimes the path to safety begins in the kitchen.

We have just completed the first meeting as part of the project “On the Path to Safety – Support for Women with Experience of Forced Migration and Violence.” This time, we met at Gastrostrefa Culinary Studio, where our participants learned how to prepare traditional Polish dishes. We chose the classics — but with an important extra focus.

The aim was not only to discover new recipes, but above all to learn how to use seasonal ingredients and prepare nutritious, wholesome meals for themselves and their children. There were new flavours, new skills and plenty of culinary discoveries. But what happened between the cooking was just as important. Preparing food together created space for conversation, laughter, sharing experiences and simply spending time together. For some, cooking is a great pleasure; for others, it can also be a way to slow down, regain a sense of agency and take care of themselves. Because when we prepare a meal with our own hands and then sit down to eat it with those close to us, something important happens: we do something for ourselves and for others. We have an impact. We create. We share. We are together.

These are exactly the kinds of moments we want to create through our project — moments that help build a sense of safety, independence, relationships and the confidence to take the next step.

This is only the beginning of our journey together. We would like to thank all the participants for this wonderful time and for everything each of you brought to our first meeting!
